Hauling Like A Brooligan

Stephen Gallagher

Doctor Who: Terminus

(BBC) – 1984

A four-part story for season 19. Set on a quarantine ship, the opening episode was the subject of a protest from the British Leprosy Association over the portrayal of ‘Lazars disease’, which the unfolding storyline revealed to be a curable condition unjustly stigmatised.

After the arthouse movie aesthetic of Warriors’ Gate, Terminus drew heavily on Norse mythology and medieval memento mori art.

Tom Baker had by now left the series, and the Doctor was played by Peter Davison. Companions were Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), Tegan (Janet Fielding), and Turlough (Mark Strickson).
